Master Guide Jim Weidner and Registered Guide Bob Summers specialize in fair chase hunts for caribou, brown/ grizzly bear and Dall sheep in the Alaska wilderness. Our two primary hunting areas are located on the Alaska Peninsula and in the Arctic. We hunt the Alaska Peninsula for brown bear and the Arctic for Dall sheep, grizzly and caribou.
Today’s big-game hunter faces unique challenges not even imagined by our fathers and our grandfathers. In the old days, an Alaska big-game hunt required lengthy travel by land, air and sea to remote field locations, and hunters sometimes remained afield for several weeks. These days, it’s possible for a hunter to be sipping a latte in Chicago’s O’Hare airport in the morning, and relaxing by a campfire in the high Arctic by nightfall, as the aurora dances across the twilight sky.
While those long expedition hunts are mostly a thing of the past, today’s hunters are still looking for a totally immersive experience. It takes a special kind of guide service to provide that, and Deltana works hard to do exactly that.
Deltana Outfitters offers hunts in two geographically distinct areas, each of which presents a completely unique experience from the other. Our Dall sheep hunts are conducted on an exclusive federally-permitted concession within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, in Alaska’s Brooks Range. This area also offers an opportunity to hunt barren-ground caribou and grizzly. Our trophy brown bear hunts take place on an exclusive federal concession located on the Alaska Peninsula, within Izembek National Wildlife Refuge. The Alaska Peninsula produces some of the largest brown bears in the world.
The advantage of hunting these two exclusive federal concessions cannot be overstated. What this means to us is that we can adjust the number of hunters we take into these areas in order to ensure a long-term sustainable harvest of larger rams, and trophy-quality large male bears. For our hunters, this exclusivity means that they will not be competing with other guided hunters.
A hunter and a guide develop a unique bond through the course of a hunt, and often these bonds develop into friendships that can last a lifetime. We take particular care to ensure the safety and comfort of our hunters, while recognizing that, for many hunters, their Alaska experience represents the fulfillment of a life-long dream. It is our privilege to help make that dream a reality.
