Skilak Lake, Upper

The Upper Skilak Campground offers relative peace and quiet during the summer months. It has several campsites for campers and RVs, and some walk-in tent sites along the lakeshore, with parking nearby.

NOTES: The Upper Skilak boat ramp is a popular take-out for rafting parties running the Upper Kenai from Jim's Landing, through the canyon and into Skilak Lake. It's a six-mile run from where the Kenai River flows into Skilak Lake, so an outboard motor is your best option for making the run. Note that Skilak Lake is bordered by a glacier at the head of the lake, which produces air currents that can develop into strong winds over the lake, particularly on warmer summer days. Make the run in the early or later hours when the wind lays down. The lake can be very dangerous with wind-driven waves.

This campground is administered by the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.

Skilak Lake offers fishing for several species, but the water is totally opaque with glacial silt, and is mostly unfishable. Concentrate your efforts on clearwater streams flowing into the lake for your best results.
